Two new members have written their names into the Club’s history books after winning their first BBC Club Singles Championship.
In the Men’s Singles, Rick Smith proved too consistent for Kevin Pattison (runner up) who was aiming to win his 2nd Singles club championship. The game was relatively close early, however Rick capitalised on Kevin’s error of inadvertently giving the shot away, which cost him severely in the first seven ends, and he quickly raced to a 13-3 lead. Then after playing more outstanding bowls, he looked to hold an unassailable lead at 20-7 when Kevin finally managed to get the jack back, and he went long. The momentum of the game suddenly swung, and Kevin managed to peg back the margin to 20-15. With Kevin holding a further very close one, Rick played a clutch draw bowl with his last, winning the end, and then after two more outstanding ends, he closed out the contest, ultimately winning 25-15 over 21 ends.
In the Women’s Singles, Kathy Maskrey who joined our Club this year after leaving Burden Park, proved far too steady for last year’s champion Anita Jurgens (runner up). Like the men’s event, Kathy jumped Anita early after winning the jack, and she quickly stretched the length of end to her favourite ‘ditch to ditch’. Kathy then continued to build the score, winning several multiples, and she raced out to a 21-8 lead. Despite Anita significantly improving her bowls over the next 5 ends, she was unable to stop Kathy’s momentum. Kathy ended up taking the contest 25-12 over 22 ends.
The Club congratulates all those who competed in this years events.
