For the third year in a row, Brighton 1 has completed a very successful season, but failed to gain promotion to Premier League.
After winning the 2nd Semi Final against a strong Cheltenham team, we went into the Division 1 Grand Final with plenty of confidence, despite Caulfield Park Alma (CPA) having beaten us twice throughout the season.
In the Grand Final on a disappointingly ‘sluggish’ green at Mulgrave Country Club, we were jumped early by CPA, who raced to a 27-5 lead after the first 15 ends. Despite improving our performance in the next 20 ends, we went into the half time break trailing by 18. After the break, all rinks started to claw back the deficit, eventually getting it back to just 1 shot. Unfortunately, as soon as we got back to level, we dropped 13 shots across three rinks, and we were never able to bridge the gap, finally being defeated by 9 shots. (72-81)
Although disappointed by the result, it was an outstanding effort by the team to reach the Grand Final, considering we lost 4 key players including our playing coach Mark Jacobsen, two games before Christmas. (i.e. with 8 rounds to go). Special congratulations must go to Anita Jurgens, Stuart Pyers and Harley Harber who all had outstanding games in the GF.
Final results were as follows ;
Anita Jurgens, Garry Crole, Kevin Pattison, Gary Willcox drew with G. Spencer 23-23
Alan Weissman, Harley Harber, Rick Nowlan, Lisa Smith lost to H. Lumberger 16-17
John Rowell, Michael Butler, Stuart Pyers , Rick Smith defeated M. Bowman 21-20
Keith Kuring, George Marini, Jack Lawton and Richard Fulton lost to R. Jones 12-21
