Jacobsen and Jurgens are Club Champions

Mark Jacobsen won an incredible 21st Club Singles Championship today, after surviving a dogged effort from Stuart Pyers, who was searching for his first ever Singles title. Stuart jumped Mark early with some outstanding draw bowling, seizing the advantage on the preferred side of Rink 2 and making it difficult for Mark to score. After trailing 5-10 however, Mark started to find his line and length, and he gradually clawed Stuart’s lead back. He then applied extreme pressure over the next six ends, forcing Stuart onto the more difficult wider hand and sneaking away to a 15-11 lead. Stuart again fought back, squaring the match at 19-19, however Marks experience came to the fore in the next four ends and he eventually drew away, winning the match 25-19.

In the Women’s Singles Final, the experienced Anita Jurgens proved far too strong for Marilyn Pattison, who was playing in her first major title match at the Club. Despite Marilyn trying very hard to stay in the match, Anita really brought her ‘A’ game today, not allowing Marilyn into the match at all,  consistently getting 2 or 3 bowls within two feet. Using short ends on the 16 second green to her advantage, she jumped Marilyn early, and never let her get her rhythm., eventually running out a 25-2 winner.

Congratulations to our winners, who will now represent Brighton in the Sandbelt Singles Champion of Champions tournament. Keep your eye out for details of where these matches are being played over the coming weeks, and support our members wherever possible.

A big thanks to Richard Fulton and David Crook for ‘marking’ the Finals, and as always, to Helen for supplying a sumptuous barbecue lunch for players and spectators.
